Mai Po Nature Reserve

Located in the northwestern New Territories, the Mai Po Nature Reserve is Hong Kong's most important wetland conservation area, widely known as a "Bird Paradise." In 1995, the Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay wetlands were designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. The reserve features diverse wetland habitats, including gei wais (traditional shrimp ponds), mangroves, intertidal mudflats, freshwater ponds, and reedbeds, which serve as a critical habitat for a vast array of wildlife. Every winter, approximately 60,000 migratory birds visit the area. Managed by WWF-Hong Kong since 1983, the reserve is dedicated to conservation, research, and public environmental education, offering various guided eco-visits and programs.
