Shing Mun Country Park, established in 1977, is one of Hong Kong's earliest designated country parks. Spanning 1,400 hectares in the central New Territories, it surrounds the picturesque Shing Mun Reservoir and is a highly accessible haven for nature lovers. Natural Wonders & Wildlife: The park is world-renowned for its magnificent Paper-bark tree woodlands. When the reservoir is full, the reflection of the flooded trees creates a breathtaking oasis. The area is also a vibrant sanctuary for numerous butterfly species and home to a large population of wild macaques (monkeys). Military History: It houses the historic Shing Mun Redoubt, a major World War II defensive stronghold featuring a complex network of operational tunnels, trenches, and pillboxes. Hiking & Recreation: Iconic long-distance trails like Sections 7 & 8 of the MacLehose Trail and Section 7 of the Wilson Trail pass through the park. For a more leisurely stroll, the Shing Mun Jogging Trail loops gently around the reservoir, making it perfect for family picnics, easy walks, and landscape photography.
